Another shop quoted you a repair. Maybe the dealer service department. Maybe a chain. Maybe an independent that's been your shop for years. The estimate is high. Or the recommended repair doesn't match what the car is actually doing. Or the explanation didn't quite add up. You want a second opinion before you authorize.

That's what this page is for. Green's Garage has been Miami's independent diagnostic-first shop since 1957 — three generations of family ownership, ASE Master Certified, ASE L3 Hybrid/EV Specialist, with manufacturer-level diagnostic platforms for 7+ brands and dealer-level scan tool access for the rest. We're independent. We're not paid on parts volume. We don't have a service manager pushing us to upsell. When you bring us another shop's estimate, we do our own diagnostic from scratch — we don't assume anyone else got it right or wrong — and tell you in writing what we found, what the repair actually is, and what it should cost. Then you decide what to authorize, and where to have it done. Same-week appointments. 2-year / 24,000-mile warranty on any repair we perform. Call (305) 444-8881.

You're in the right place if you're dealing with:

  • A dealer estimate that feels high — the kind where you do the math and realize the labor hours are more than the work actually requires
  • A recommended repair that doesn't match the symptom — the shop says you need a new transmission, but the car shifts fine and the issue is intermittent
  • A repair that was already performed but didn't fix the problem — the misfire is back, the leak is back, the warning light came back on a week later
  • Three different shops with three different diagnoses for the same problem, and you don't know who to trust
  • A major repair on an older car and you're trying to decide if it's worth fixing or worth replacing the vehicle
  • A pre-purchase inspection on a used car before you commit — you want an independent shop to verify what the seller's mechanic claimed
  • A dealer service department that quoted a part replacement when the actual fault might be something simpler (or more complex) than they identified
  • A factory warranty claim that was denied and you want to know whether the denial was legitimate before you escalate
  • An insurance estimate after a collision that you want verified before you accept the settlement

If any of this describes your situation, call (305) 444-8881 or schedule a second opinion online.

What "Second Opinion" Actually Means at Green's Garage

Some shops will glance at another shop's estimate, agree with it, and quote you the same repair for less. That's not what we do. A second opinion at Green's is an independent diagnostic from scratch. We don't read the other shop's diagnosis until after we've done our own — and even then, only to compare notes and explain the differences if any.

Here's what that looks like in practice:

1. Symptom interview first. Before we plug anything in, we ask the driver to describe exactly when the problem happens, what it sounds like, what triggers it, what's already been tried, and what the other shop said. Half of misdiagnoses happen because nobody asked the driver the right questions. We ask them.

2. Manufacturer-level scan. We connect using the factory diagnostic platform built for your vehicle, not a generic OBD-II reader: PATHFINDER (Land Rover, Range Rover, Jaguar), wiTECH 2 (Jeep, Ram, Chrysler), HDS (Honda, Acura), Subaru Select Monitor SSM-IV (Subaru), VIDA (Volvo), Mazda's factory platform (Mazda), Toyota Techstream (Toyota, Lexus, Toyota-platform hybrids). For other makes we use dealer-level scan tools sufficient for the in-scope work. This is the difference between reading P-codes and reading the full module map.

3. Targeted physical testing. Scan data points us toward a system. We confirm with the right physical test — compression, leak-down, fuel pressure, ignition output, smoke test for vacuum leaks, dye trace for fluid leaks. We don't replace parts to "see if it fixes it." That's how cars come back to the shop a week later.

4. Root cause analysis. A misfire code on cylinder 4 doesn't always mean cylinder 4's coil is bad. It might mean the injector harness is shorted, the timing chain tensioner is starved for oil pressure, or the ECM is throwing the code because of a separate sensor fault upstream. We separate the symptom from the cause before quoting anything.

5. Written findings — and a real comparison if relevant. You get our diagnosis in writing, with our recommended repair, our cost, and — when relevant — lower-cost / mid / OE options. If the other shop's estimate matches what we found, we tell you. If we disagree, we explain why in plain language, with the specific scan data or physical evidence that supports our finding. You leave with documentation, not just an opinion.

You decide what to authorize, and where to have it done. If you want us to do the repair, we do it. If you want to take our findings back to the original shop and have them do the work, that's fine too. If you want to walk away from both shops, we'll point you toward a specialist if your situation requires one.

What a Second Opinion Costs

$185 for the first hour. That covers the symptom interview, manufacturer-level scan, targeted physical testing, written findings, and a 15-minute walkthrough with the technician or service writer so you understand what we found.

Complex multi-system diagnostics (intermittent electrical faults, multiple unrelated warning lights, post-dealer-repair faults that came back) may need additional time. We quote the additional time before we start. You always know what the next 30 minutes will cost before we commit to it.

If you authorize repairs at Green's after the second opinion, the diagnostic fee applies toward the repair bill. If you don't authorize repairs, the $185 covers the diagnostic and the written findings — you walk away with a document you can use to negotiate with the original shop, take to a specialist, or use to make the keep-or-sell decision on the vehicle.

No upsell pressure. If we find the original estimate was accurate and you don't need a different repair, we'll tell you that. We'd rather tell you the truth and lose the $4,800 repair than do unnecessary work and lose the customer for life.

Common Second Opinion Scenarios We See

The dealer-quoted-major-repair scenario

Customer brings in a 2018 Land Rover Discovery. Dealer quoted $6,200 for an air suspension compressor replacement and rear air strut. Customer paid $185 for the dealer's diagnostic and wants verification. Our PATHFINDER scan confirms the rear air strut is genuinely failing — but the compressor is fine. Real repair: $2,800. Customer authorizes the strut work with us, keeps the compressor, and saves $3,400 against the dealer's estimate. Genuinely common scenario.

The repair-didn't-fix-it scenario

Customer's 2017 Honda Pilot has a P0301 misfire code. Previous shop replaced the cylinder 1 coil pack and spark plug — $480. Two weeks later, the misfire returned. Our HDS scan plus a compression test identifies a leaking exhaust valve seat caused by a stuck VTC actuator. Real repair is the VTC actuator, not the coil pack. Customer is rightfully frustrated with the original shop and now has documentation to request a refund or warranty work on the unnecessary coil pack replacement.

The estimate-doesn't-match-the-symptom scenario

Customer's 2014 Subaru Outback is leaking oil. Another shop quoted $3,200 for a head gasket replacement (the well-known EJ-series Subaru issue). Customer thought the leak pattern looked wrong for a head gasket — it was dripping from the front, not from the head. Our diagnostic with dye trace identifies a leaking timing cover seal — $850 repair. Head gasket is fine. The other shop saw "Subaru" and "oil leak" and pattern-matched to the most common cause without confirming.

The pre-purchase inspection scenario

Customer is buying a 2019 Range Rover Sport from a private seller. Asking price $42,000. They want an independent inspection before committing. Our PATHFINDER scan reveals stored fault codes for the air suspension that were cleared just before listing. Compression test on the supercharged V8 shows cylinder 7 reading 18% low. Air suspension repair plus engine work would be $8,000+ in deferred maintenance. Customer renegotiates the price to $34,000 with documentation, or walks away. Either way, the $185 diagnostic saved them either $8,000 or the full purchase price.

The intermittent-fault scenario

Customer's 2016 BMW X5 has an intermittent "Service Engine Soon" light that comes on and off on its own. Two previous shops cleared the code, said "drive it and see," and charged $120 each. Light keeps coming back. We hook up our scan tool during a hot Miami afternoon (the temperature condition the customer described) and capture freeze-frame data showing the fault occurs only when intake air temperature exceeds 95°F — a thermostat-housing temperature sensor failing under specific conditions. $340 repair. Eight months of "drive it and see" frustration resolved in 90 minutes.

Pre-Purchase Inspections as a Second Opinion

A pre-purchase inspection is a second opinion on a vehicle that isn't yet yours. You're considering buying it; the seller (or the seller's mechanic) says it's in good shape. You want an independent verification before you commit.

What we check on a pre-purchase inspection:

  • Full manufacturer-level diagnostic scan — current codes, stored codes, freeze-frame data on any past faults
  • Compression and leak-down test on the engine if scan data suggests it (or always, on older high-mileage vehicles)
  • Fluid analysis — oil condition, transmission fluid condition, coolant condition, brake fluid moisture content
  • Visual inspection of brake pads, rotors, suspension components, exhaust system, frame
  • Tire condition and wear patterns (which can reveal alignment or suspension issues)
  • Hybrid battery state-of-health analysis on hybrid/PHEV/EV vehicles
  • Air suspension compressor, strut, and valve block testing on equipped vehicles (Land Rover, Range Rover, Volvo XC90, Mercedes-Benz GLE/GLS, etc.)
  • Documented service history review — what's been done, what's been deferred, what's coming due
  • Final written report you can use to negotiate the purchase price or walk away

Cost: Starts at $185 for the standard PPI. Hybrid/PHEV/EV pre-purchase inspections that include high-voltage battery analysis are typically $245 due to the additional time. For luxury or air-suspension-equipped vehicles, we may quote $245 upfront because the systems requiring inspection take longer.

Why Green's Garage for a Second Opinion

  • Independent since 1957. Three generations of family ownership. We've been here longer than the dealer service department, longer than the chain shops, longer than most of the indie specialists. We've seen everything fail in every possible way.
  • No parts volume incentives. Our technicians aren't paid commission on parts. Our service writers aren't pressured to hit upsell targets. The diagnostic comes first; the repair quote follows what the diagnostic actually finds.
  • ASE Master Certified technicians across European, Japanese, American, and luxury platforms.
  • ASE L3 Hybrid/EV Specialist — the advanced credential for high-voltage diagnostics. Most Miami independents don't carry it.
  • Manufacturer-level diagnostic platforms for our specialty brands (PATHFINDER, wiTECH 2, HDS, SSM-IV, VIDA, Mazda factory tool, Toyota Techstream) plus dealer-level scan tool access for the in-scope work we perform on other makes.
  • Written findings before any repair authorization. Always. On every job. You see what we found.
  • 2-year / 24,000-mile warranty on any repair you authorize at Green's — among the strongest in independent auto repair in Miami.
  • Same-week appointment availability for second opinions; often same-day if the situation is urgent.
  • Habla Español. Native Caribbean Spanish service.
  • Free Uber/Lyft within 5 miles while we work on your car.
  • Independent, not a franchise. Your second opinion comes from a Miami family business, not a corporate parts-replacement model.

Second Opinion FAQ

What does a second opinion cost? $165 for the first hour, which covers the symptom interview, manufacturer-level scan, targeted physical testing, and written findings. If you authorize repairs at Green's, the $165 applies toward the repair bill. If you don't, you keep the written findings and walk away — no further obligation.

Will you give me a second opinion if my car is still at another shop? You'd need to get the car to us — we don't do mobile second opinions or remote diagnosis review. But you don't need to authorize any work at the other shop first. Tell them you want to take your car for an independent diagnostic before authorizing the repair. Most shops will release your vehicle without charging the original diagnostic fee if you're not authorizing the work; if they do charge a diagnostic, that fee is between you and them.

What if you find the original shop was right? We'll tell you — in writing. We'd rather say "the other shop's estimate was accurate, here's our quote for the same work if you want us to do it" than do unnecessary work to justify the $165 second opinion fee. About 30-40% of the second opinions we run confirm the original shop's diagnosis. The other 60-70% find a different issue, a less expensive repair, or unnecessary work in the original quote.

Do I have to authorize the repair with you after the second opinion? No. The $165 covers the diagnostic and the written findings. You can take our findings back to the original shop, take them to a specialist, get a third opinion somewhere else, or just keep the document for your records. You're not obligated to authorize anything.

Will you tell me the other shop is wrong or trying to scam me? We'll tell you what we found and what the actual repair is. We won't speculate about the other shop's motives — sometimes a different diagnosis is just a different diagnosis, not a scam. Sometimes the other shop's technician made an honest mistake. Sometimes the original diagnosis was right and we agree with it. Sometimes the original estimate was inflated and we'll show you the math. We'll give you the facts and let you decide what to do with them.

How long does a second opinion take? Most second opinions take 1-2 hours including the writeup. Complex multi-system second opinions (intermittent electrical, post-dealer-repair faults, used-vehicle pre-purchase inspections on luxury platforms) may take 3-4 hours. We quote the time before we start. You're usually walking out with the report the same day you drop the car off.

Can you do a second opinion on a recall or warranty issue? Yes, but with caveats. We can diagnose the problem and document our findings, but we can't perform the actual repair if it's covered by an active manufacturer recall or factory warranty — those have to go through the dealer. The value of a second opinion in that scenario is having independent documentation if the dealer claims the issue isn't covered or denies the warranty claim. Our written findings can support an escalation to the manufacturer's customer service or to your state's attorney general office if needed.

What about insurance estimates after a collision? We can verify the mechanical and electrical repair scope on a collision estimate. We don't do body work or paint — that requires a body shop — but we can verify whether the suspension, alignment, electrical, and mechanical portions of the insurance estimate are accurate before you accept the settlement.

Habla Español? Sí. Tenemos personal que habla español caribeño nativo. Le explicaremos los hallazgos y la diferencia entre nuestra evaluación y la del otro taller en español, si lo prefiere.
