Why Subaru Suspension Wears the Way It Does
Wheel bearings at 80,000–120,000 miles
This is the signature Subaru suspension item. Symmetrical AWD drives all four wheels continuously, so all four bearings carry drive load rather than just rolling. On a front-wheel-drive car the rear bearings loaf; on a Subaru they work. That's why Subarus need bearings on a predictable schedule while comparable cars don't.
The tell is a hum or growl that rises with road speed and changes when you steer — load shifts onto the failing side, and the noise gets louder or quieter depending on direction. More on how and why bearings fail.
Worth knowing: on many Subaru models the bearing is pressed into the knuckle rather than being a bolt-on hub assembly. That's a labor difference, and it's why quotes vary so much between shops. We'll tell you which type your vehicle uses before you authorize.
Front lower control arm bushings
The rear bushing on the front lower control arm is a known Subaru wear point. It's a large rubber bushing carrying braking load, and when it deteriorates you get a clunk under braking, vague steering, and alignment that won't hold. Miami heat accelerates rubber breakdown — these fail here faster than in temperate climates.
Strut mounts and mount bearings
Creaking or popping when turning the wheel at low speed, most noticeable pulling into a parking space. The bearing in the top mount binds. Frequently misdiagnosed as a bad strut, and the strut is often fine.
Sway bar end links
The cheapest rattle on the car and the most commonly misdiagnosed. A knock over small bumps that sounds much more serious than it is. Worth checking before anyone quotes struts.
Rear trailing arm and lateral link bushings
Common on Outback and Legacy. Produces rear-end wander and uneven rear tire wear, which is exactly the condition that stresses the AWD system.
Struts and shocks
They don't fail suddenly — they fade. Most owners adapt to the decline without noticing until the car is compared against a fresh one. The measurable symptoms are extended bounce after a bump, nose dive under braking, and cupped tire wear. What shocks and struts actually do.
Miami-specific factors
Salt air corrosion on subframe bolts, strut hardware, and sway bar links — especially on cars from Key Biscayne, Brickell, and Miami Beach. Corroded fasteners are the reason a suspension job sometimes takes longer than the book time says, and we'd rather tell you that up front than surprise you.

The Subaru AWD Connection Nobody Mentions
This matters more on a Subaru than on almost anything else you could drive.
Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive expects all four tires to roll at matched circumference. When a suspension fault causes uneven wear — a worn control arm bushing throwing camber off, a failing bearing scrubbing a tire — the tires develop different rolling diameters. The AWD system then runs with a continuous speed differential between axles, and that load lands on the center differential or transfer clutch.
So the real cost of ignoring a suspension complaint on a Subaru isn't the suspension part. It's the drivetrain repair that follows, which is an order of magnitude more expensive.
It also means alignment isn't optional after suspension work on these cars, and it's why we include four-wheel alignment rather than quoting it separately. How We Diagnose Subaru Suspension
1. Road test with your description in hand. Does the noise change with speed or with steering input? Does it happen over sharp bumps or long undulations? Under braking or acceleration? Those distinctions separate a bearing from a bushing from a strut before the car goes on a lift.
2. Tire wear reading. Inside edge, outside edge, cupping, feathering — each points at a different cause. This is free information most shops walk past.
3. Loaded and unloaded inspection. Some faults only show with the suspension at ride height, others only with it hanging. We check both. A bushing that looks fine unloaded can be visibly deteriorated under load.
4. Bearing isolation. Spin test, load test, and steering-input correlation on the road to identify which corner. Tire noise mimics bearing noise closely enough that a lot of good bearings get replaced by shops that don't separate them.
5. Four-wheel alignment measurement — before and after. The before reading frequently identifies the worn component, because a camber or toe value that won't come into spec points directly at what's failed.

Can you install and align a lift kit?

How long does suspension work take?
Most jobs are same-day. Wheel bearings pressed into the knuckle take longer than bolt-on hub assemblies, and corroded hardware — common on coastal cars — can add time. We give you the expected duration up front and tell you if corrosion changes it.
Is it safe to drive with a noisy wheel bearing?
For a short time, at reduced speed, to get it looked at. Not indefinitely. A bearing that fails completely can seize or allow enough play to damage the hub, the ABS sensor, and in the worst case affect wheel retention. If the noise is loud or accompanied by vibration or a warning light, bring it in now.
