The 12V Battery Is Tested First. Every Car, Every Visit.
Before any Techstream session is interpreted and before any high-voltage conclusion is drawn.
Every Toyota hybrid carries a conventional 12V auxiliary battery alongside the traction pack, and it powers the control computers that manage everything — including the system main relays that connect the high-voltage battery to the car.
When it weakens, its internal resistance rises and voltage sags under load. The hybrid control system reads that instability as a fault, and the warning it produces looks identical to a genuine high-voltage problem.
In Miami's heat, the 12V reaches that threshold at 18 to 30 months of outdoor operation, against 36 to 48 in a cooler climate.
A Toyota hybrid that won't enter READY is very often a dead 12V, not a dead traction pack. The conductance test takes fifteen minutes.

Before You Authorize a Battery
The traction pack is the most expensive component on the car and it's where a fault code most often points. It is frequently not what failed.
These all produce symptoms that read as pack failure:
A degraded 12V battery. The single most common cause in Miami.
A blocked battery cooling intake. Toyota hybrid packs are cooled by cabin air drawn through a vent — usually behind the rear seat or in the parcel area. That vent clogs with dust and pet hair. Restricted airflow means the pack runs hot and loses capacity permanently. It's a ten-minute inspection that protects the most expensive part on the car, and almost nobody checks it.
A single weak module. Toyota packs are built from individual modules — 28 in a Gen 2 or Gen 3 Prius. One failing module drags the whole pack's behaviour, and the system reports pack failure.
The inverter coolant pump. Separate from the engine cooling system, and a known failure point. Presents as reduced power under load — typically on the highway on a hot afternoon, fine at low speed.
A corroded connector or a failed relay. Cheap parts, expensive-looking symptoms.

Module Replacement — the Honest Version
Toyota packs are module-serviceable, and that's genuinely good news. Replacing one module costs a fraction of a pack, and there's a mature aftermarket behind it.
But a module swap only works when the rest of the pack is healthy.
If the pack is broadly degraded and one module simply failed first, the new module spends its life carrying the others. The system rebalances toward the weakest members and you're back within a year, having paid twice.
That distinction is the whole diagnosis, and it's why we measure every module rather than just the one the code points at.
Sometimes the honest answer is a reconditioned or replacement pack. Sometimes, on a fifteen-year-old car, it's that the vehicle has reached the end of what's worth spending on it. You'll get that answer with the data behind it.

Prius Brake Actuator — the Expensive One Nobody Warns You About
If your Prius or Prius c shows ABS, VSC, BRAKE and a brake system message together, that combination usually isn't friction brakes.
Toyota's electronically controlled brake system uses an electric pump and an accumulator to provide braking assist. When the accumulator stops holding pressure, you lose power assist. The pedal goes hard, stopping distance increases substantially, and ABS and stability control switch off.
The code signature is specific: C1252 (pump motor on time abnormally long), C1253 (pump motor relay), C1256 (accumulator pressure low). Sometimes C1391.
Do not keep driving it. There's a mechanical fallback that still stops the car, but the assist is gone and the front brakes are doing all the work.
Two things matter here. First, the diagnosis is a pressure-decay test — watch accumulator pressure after the pump shuts off, with no pedal input. A pressure that bleeds down confirms the internal leak.
Second, and more important for your wallet: Toyota has issued Customer Support Programs covering this exact failure on some model years. Before you pay anyone — including us — have the VIN checked for open coverage. We'll tell you the same on the phone.
Other Toyota Hybrid Repairs We Do
EGR system carbon cleaning. A well-known Gen 3 Prius issue. Carbon accumulates in the EGR circuit and cooler, causing misfires, rough running and in severe cases head gasket failure. Cleaning it is far cheaper than what happens if you don't.
Inverter coolant pump. Separate circuit from the engine. Failure causes power electronics overheating and derate.
Water pump. The electric water pump on Prius and other Toyota hybrids is a common failure at higher mileage.
Hybrid transaxle. Motor-generator faults, transaxle fluid service, and the noise complaints that get misattributed to the engine.
12V and DC/DC converter. These cars have no alternator. The DC/DC converter charges the 12V from the traction pack, and when it runs intermittently the 12V drains and gets replaced repeatedly without anyone addressing the cause.
A/C. Toyota hybrids use an electric compressor running on high voltage, which requires POE refrigerant oil and separate recovery equipment. Cross-contamination with conventional PAG oil destroys the compressor — a mistake shops without dedicated hybrid A/C equipment make.
What Miami's Climate Does to Toyota Hybrids
12V batteries die on a compressed timeline. 18 to 30 months instead of 36 to 48.
NiMH packs fade faster here. Sustained heat accelerates capacity loss in nickel-metal-hydride more than in lithium. The reduced assist and falling fuel economy Miami owners notice at high mileage is the predictable result.
Cooling intake vents clog. Coastal dust, humidity and daily-driver debris. This is preventable in ten minutes and it's the single cheapest thing you can do to protect a Toyota hybrid pack.
Stop-and-go maximizes regenerative cycling. Good for fuel economy. But high charge-cycle frequency at elevated ambient temperature is the most demanding combination for any battery chemistry.
Brakes corrode rather than wear. Regen means the friction brakes barely get used. Pads look nearly new while caliper slides seize. Cleaning and lubricating the slides is the real brake service on a hybrid in this climate.

The Toyota dealer is right for active recalls, Customer Support Programs and warranty work — and hybrid battery coverage runs long on these cars, so check your status before paying out of pocket.
