Transmission Repair & Service Miami

If your transmission is slipping between gears, shuddering at highway speed, making a whining noise, or showing a warning light, bring it to Green's Garage before a minor fault becomes a major repair. We have been servicing transmission systems in Miami since 1957, with a dedicated transmission specialist on-site for automatic, dual-clutch, CVT, and manual gearboxes across all makes and models.

We diagnose the root cause before recommending any repair. A transmission fault code does not tell you which component has failed — it tells you which system is affected. The difference between a solenoid replacement and a full transmission rebuild is thousands of dollars, and the only way to know which you actually need is a proper diagnostic with live data, fluid analysis, and a road test.

Warning signs your transmission needs attention

Transmission problems almost never fix themselves. The following symptoms all indicate something that will get worse and more expensive if left unaddressed:

Slipping or delayed engagement. The engine revs but the car hesitates before moving, or the gear changes feel disconnected from the throttle. On automatic transmissions this commonly indicates low fluid pressure, a worn clutch pack, or a failing solenoid. On ZF 8-speed units common to Land Rover, Jeep, BMW, and Audi, it often points to the valve body or torque converter lockup.

Shuddering during acceleration or at highway speed. A vibration or shudder between 40–70 mph that disappears at other speeds is a classic torque converter lockup shudder — particularly common on RAM 1500, Honda Accord, and Ford F-150 models. It feels like driving over rumble strips and is often misdiagnosed as an engine or drivetrain issue.

Hard, harsh, or erratic gear changes. If shifts feel sudden, clunky, or the transmission seems to hunt for the right gear, this indicates a hydraulic pressure issue, solenoid fault, or transmission control module problem. On Mercedes-Benz 7G-Tronic and 9G-Tronic units, harsh shifts often follow a failed conductor plate — a known failure point on these gearboxes.

Transmission warning light. Unlike an engine check light which can be triggered by dozens of sensors, a transmission warning light or "Trans Fault" message indicates the TCU (transmission control unit) has detected a specific fault. This always requires a proper scan tool — not a generic OBD reader — to identify the correct fault code and live data.

Fluid leaks. Red or brown fluid under the car near the centre of the vehicle is transmission fluid. A leak can be from a pan gasket, cooler line, input shaft seal, or output shaft seal — each requiring a different repair. Driving with low transmission fluid accelerates internal wear.

Burning smell. Overheated transmission fluid smells distinctly different from engine oil. If you notice a burning smell after hard driving or towing, pull over and call us. Continuing to drive with overheating fluid damages clutch material and can turn a fluid service into a rebuild.

Transmission services we provide

Fluid service and filter replacement. The most common and cost-effective transmission maintenance. We drain the old fluid, replace the filter (where accessible), clean the pan, and refill with the correct fluid specification for your transmission. Using the wrong fluid type — particularly on modern ZF, Mercedes, and Honda CVT units — causes more damage than skipping the service entirely. We use manufacturer-specified fluids only.

Transmission diagnostics. Full scan tool diagnostic including fault code read, live data monitoring of all solenoids, pressure sensors, gear ratios, and torque converter lockup status. Road test before and after to confirm the fault. Written report provided with findings before any repair is recommended.

Solenoid replacement. Shift solenoids, pressure control solenoids, and TCC solenoids are the most common single-component transmission failures. In many cases a solenoid replacement restores full function without any internal transmission work.

Valve body service and replacement. The valve body is the hydraulic control centre of an automatic transmission. On ZF 8HP units (Land Rover, Jeep, BMW, Audi, RAM) and Mercedes 7G/9G-Tronic units, the valve body is the most common cause of harsh shifting, delayed engagement, and fault codes. We service and replace valve bodies without removing the transmission in most cases.

Torque converter service. Torque converter failure or lockup clutch failure causes shudder, slip, and reduced fuel economy. We diagnose torque converter faults with live data before recommending replacement.

Transmission replacement and rebuild. When internal damage is confirmed — worn clutch packs, broken planetary gears, damaged drum — we source quality replacement units and fit them with a warranty. We do not recommend a rebuild or replacement based on symptoms alone. Diagnosis always comes first.

Transmission systems we specialise in — by brand

Land Rover & Range Rover — ZF 8HP automatic. The ZF 8-speed is fitted to Range Rover Sport (L494), Range Rover (L405), Discovery 5, and Defender (2020+). Common faults include harsh cold shifting, torque converter shudder, and valve body solenoid failure. These units require ZF-approved fluid and specialist scan tools to diagnose correctly. We service all Land Rover ZF 8HP units in Miami.

Mercedes-Benz — 7G-Tronic & 9G-Tronic. The 7G-Tronic (722.9) is fitted to most Mercedes models from 2004 and the 9G-Tronic from 2013. Conductor plate failure is the most common fault — it causes harsh shifting, slipping, and fault codes. Fluid specification is critical on these units: using the wrong fluid type damages the conductor plate further. We use Mercedes-approved fluid only and diagnose with XENTRY-level scan tools.

Jeep — ZF 8HP & 62TE. The Wrangler and Grand Cherokee use the ZF 8HP on newer models and the 65RFE or 62TE on older ones. Common faults include torque converter shudder on the 8HP, solenoid pack failure on the 62TE, and TCM software faults requiring reprogramming. We diagnose Jeep transmission faults with Autel MaxiSys at full manufacturer-level depth.

RAM 1500 & 2500 — ZF 8HP & 68RFE. The 2019+ RAM 1500 uses the ZF 8HP. HD trucks (2500/3500) use the 68RFE 6-speed, which is prone to solenoid failure and torque converter issues under towing load. The 68RFE is a common repair for RAM diesel owners in Miami.

BMW — ZF 8HP & ZF 6HP. Most BMW models from 2007 use the ZF 6HP and from 2012 the ZF 8HP. Mechatronic unit failure on the 6HP is common and causes complete transmission failure. Valve body issues on the 8HP cause erratic shifting. We service both platforms.

Audi — ZF 8HP & S-tronic DSG. Audi Q5, Q7, A4, A6, and A7 models use either the ZF 8HP or Audi's own S-tronic dual-clutch gearbox. DSG mechatronic faults, clutch pack wear, and fluid degradation are the most common issues. DSG service requires VCDS or ODIS-level tooling — generic scan tools cannot read DSG live data correctly.

Honda — CVT & 6-speed automatic. Honda CVT units on CR-V, Accord, and HR-V require Honda-specific CVT fluid only. Using generic CVT fluid causes shudder and accelerated wear. The 6-speed automatic on older Accord and Pilot models is prone to third-gear clutch failure. We carry Honda-spec CVT fluid in stock.

Why specialist transmission diagnosis matters

A generic garage with a basic scan tool can read a P0700 transmission fault code. What they cannot do is read the live pressure data, solenoid duty cycle, adaptive shift values, and torque converter slip percentages that tell you whether that code means a solenoid or a rebuild. We use Autel MaxiSys Ultra, VCDS, and factory software for to read transmission data at the same depth as the manufacturer. This is the difference between fixing your transmission and replacing parts until something works.

Every transmission diagnosis at Green's Garage includes a written summary of findings before any repair is authorised. We do not start work without your approval and we do not recommend repairs we cannot justify with data.
