Classic Engine & Electrical Repair in Miami — Pre-1990 Specialist Since 1957
For the days between restorations, and the mornings when it won't start.
Green's Garage has serviced pre-1990 classic vehicles in Miami since 1957 — the same decades your car was being built and sold new. Our classic engine and electrical program is a focused service line for owners of pre-1990 classics who need mechanical service, not restoration. When your restored E-Type won't fire on Sunday morning, when your R107 SL's K-Jetronic starts running rich, when your Series III Land Rover develops a Lucas electrical fault in July heat — that's what we do. Restoration shops build cars. We keep them running.
The Nine Marques We Service — Pre-1990 Only
Our classic engine and electrical program covers nine specific vehicle traditions. Each requires distinct expertise, and each has its own technical language. Green's Garage carries the expertise for all nine — accumulated across three generations of family ownership in the same Miami building since 1957.

The Turbo R adds turbocharged induction service to the classic Bentley skill set — Garrett AiResearch turbo service, boost pressure diagnosis, intercooler system service.
What We Service (and What We Don't)
Classic vehicle service at Green's Garage is deliberately focused. We are the engine and electrical shop your restoration shop refers to — not a restoration shop competing with them.

- Lighting system service — headlamp restoration, sealed-beam service, taillight and marker lamp service
- Instrument cluster service — Smiths gauges, VDO gauges, tachometer sender service, temperature gauge sender service
- Switch and relay service, including hard-to-find British switchgear
- 12V negative-ground conversion consultation (case-by-case, preservation-first philosophy)
What we don't service:
- Body work, paint, chrome plating — refer to specialist restoration shops
- Interior restoration, upholstery, wood dashboard refinishing — refer to specialist trim shops
- Frame-off restoration — refer to restoration shops
- Cosmetic-only work — we focus on mechanical service
- Race preparation, engine modification for competition — case-by-case; preservation-first philosophy
- Restomod conversions (LS swaps, modern EFI conversions, air conditioning retrofits on non-AC cars) — case-by-case; we prefer original specification
Why the boundaries matter: Classic customers often need multiple specialists working in coordination. A body-off restoration project may involve an upholsterer, a paint specialist, a chrome plater, a machinist, and an engine and electrical shop like ours. When we define our scope clearly, we do the mechanical work with focus, and we don't compete with the specialists whose work is genuinely complementary to ours.
Why Pre-1990 Requires Different Expertise
Modern vehicle service and classic vehicle service are two different disciplines. A technician who has spent 20 years learning to read modern OBD-II diagnostic codes is not automatically qualified to synchronize a triple-SU carburetor setup on an E-Type. A shop with the latest scan tools does not automatically have a dwell meter, a synchrometer, or a working knowledge of Lucas positive-ground wiring.
Classic vehicle service is a distinct skill set:
1. Diagnostic tools change fundamentally. Modern diagnostics rely on scan tools that translate sensor data into structured fault codes. Pre-1990 vehicles have no such interface. Classic diagnosis requires a compression tester, vacuum gauge, timing light, dwell meter, ignition oscilloscope, and — most importantly — a trained ear. A classic engine tells you what's wrong through sound, feel, exhaust color, and vacuum reading. Learning to read those signals takes years.
2. Fuel systems are mechanical, not electronic. SU, Stromberg, Weber, Solex, and Zenith carburetors each have their own service disciplines. Bosch K-Jetronic mechanical fuel injection uses continuous fuel flow controlled by an air-flow sensor plate and a fuel distributor — no ECU, no O2 sensor feedback, no injectors that pulse. Adjusting a K-Jet correctly requires specialist gauges and years of experience with the specific idiosyncrasies of each engine platform.
3. Ignition is mechanical, not solid-state. Points and condenser ignition, distributor advance curves (mechanical weights and vacuum diaphragm), coil ballast resistors — these systems predate the electronic ignition modules of the 1980s and require regular maintenance intervals that don't apply to modern vehicles. Setting points gap correctly, adjusting dwell, and verifying advance curves are foundational skills for classic service.
4. Electrical systems are point-to-point wired. No CAN bus. No modules. Each circuit runs from source to switch to load with dedicated wiring, and faults are diagnosed by tracing continuity, voltage drop, and ground integrity. Lucas electrics (British), Bosch electrics (German), and Marelli electrics (Italian) each have their own conventions, color codes, and known failure patterns. Understanding these takes years of accumulated exposure.
5. Parts sourcing takes patience. A modern vehicle service part is available same-day from RockAuto or a local supplier. A pre-1990 classic part may require sourcing from Moss Motors, Victoria British, SNG Barratt, XKs Unlimited, Mercedes-Benz Classic Center, or specialty international suppliers. NOS (New Old Stock) parts, correct-reproduction components, and — when necessary — fabrication of unobtainable parts all take planning and time.
6. Miami climate is aggressive on classic materials. Rubber components fail earlier here. Aluminum oxidizes faster. Chrome pits sooner. Wiring insulation embrittles under sustained UV. Fuel system components — carburetor floats, fuel lines, diaphragms — have a shorter service life in Miami than in cooler climates. Our service approach accounts for this.
Miami-Specific Failure Patterns on Classic Vehicles
Owning a classic vehicle in Miami is different from owning one in California or Arizona. Miami's climate — high humidity, salt air, sustained UV, thermal cycling between air-conditioned garages and 95°F ambient — creates failure patterns that shops in dry climates never see. What we see routinely at Green's Garage:
Fuel system contamination. Fuel sitting in a carburetor float bowl through Miami humidity absorbs moisture. Ethanol-blended pump gas accelerates this. Result: gummed jets, corroded float valves, sticky needle valves. On multi-carburetor setups (triple SU on E-Type, dual SU on Big Healey, four Weber on classic V12), this compounds fast.
Wiring insulation degradation. Original Lucas cloth-covered wiring loses insulation flexibility in Miami's UV and humidity. Bosch cloth-braided wiring on classic Mercedes faces similar patterns. Insulation cracks lead to intermittent shorts, which classic owners often chase for months before diagnosis identifies the harness as the underlying cause. On Rolls-Royce and Bentley classics, the interior wiring runs are especially problematic due to the volume of switchgear and interior electrical accessories.
Ignition component failure. Points and condenser sets have shorter service life in Miami humidity. Distributor cap arcing is common due to condensation forming in caps that sit unused (as many classics do — driven only on weekends). Coil failures accelerate.
Coolant system stress. Miami summer traffic + un-air-conditioned classics + long idle periods = sustained cooling system stress. Original brass radiators on many classics can no longer dissipate heat adequately, especially on cars driven in Miami stop-and-go. Radiator recore or upgraded aluminum replacement is a common Miami classic service.
Fuel pump diaphragm failure. Mechanical fuel pumps on classic engines use diaphragms that fail earlier in Miami heat. Symptoms present as intermittent fuel starvation, especially in hot weather or after extended idle.
Vacuum line and vacuum-actuated accessory failures. Rubber vacuum lines throughout the engine bay degrade quickly. On classic Mercedes with vacuum-actuated door locks, central locking, and climate control, this presents as a cluster of seemingly unrelated symptoms that trace to vacuum line replacement.
Air conditioning component failure (on cars that have it). Later classics with factory A/C — R107 SL, W126, Silver Spirit/Spur, later Bentley — face component failures that don't exist on non-A/C classics. R-12 to R-134a conversion consultation is available; original R-12 service where the customer prefers preservation.
Corrosion at electrical grounds. Salt air infiltrates chassis ground points. Voltage drops at grounds present as strange, hard-to-trace electrical issues — dim lights, weak starter cranking, unstable ignition, erratic gauge readings. Cleaning and dielectric grease treatment of ground points is a routine part of our electrical service.
Our Diagnostic Approach for Classic Vehicles
Every classic vehicle service at Green's Garage follows a protocol adapted to pre-electronic diagnosis:
1. Vehicle history conversation. Before any work begins, we ask: how long have you owned it, what service has been done recently, what recent changes preceded the current concern, what is the vehicle's use pattern (weekend driver, garaged collection, occasional tour). The service approach for a driven E-Type differs from the approach for a preservation-class DB5 that gets started monthly.
2. Visual and mechanical assessment. We walk around the vehicle and evaluate under-hood condition, fluid leaks, visible wiring integrity, exhaust condition, and stance. We start the engine and listen — a trained ear identifies most classic engine faults from sound alone before any instruments touch the car.
3. Baseline mechanical measurements. Compression test across all cylinders. Vacuum gauge reading at idle and through the RPM range — this single measurement diagnoses more classic engine issues than any other test. Ignition timing verification with a timing light. Dwell angle measurement on points-ignition systems. Fuel pressure on mechanical fuel injection systems. These measurements establish the engine's current operating condition before we address specific concerns.
4. Concern-specific diagnosis. With the baseline established, we address the specific concern. A misfire on a K-Jetronic Mercedes requires different investigation than a misfire on a triple-SU Jaguar. A no-start on a classic Land Rover requires different investigation than a no-start on a Silver Shadow. We apply the right tools and techniques for the platform.
5. Findings, sourcing plan, and authorization. Every finding is documented. Where parts must be sourced from specialist suppliers, we provide an estimated sourcing timeline with the cost estimate. Nothing is ordered or installed without your explicit authorization. Classic service planning includes parts availability reality — we don't pretend a hard-to-source Lancia water pump is a two-day part when it's a three-week part.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do you do full restorations? No. We are a mechanical service shop — engine and electrical only. For body work, paint, chrome, interior, and full frame-off restoration, we refer to specialist restoration shops. Our role is what happens between restorations, and what keeps a restored car running once it's back on the road.
Do you work on cars newer than 1990? Green's Garage services modern vehicles as well — that's actually the majority of our shop's daily work. But this classic engine and electrical program is specifically pre-1990. If you have a 1993 SL500, a 1995 XJ6, or a 1998 DB7, we service those too, but under our modern classic/exotic programs — not under this pre-1990 discipline.
Do you accept non-running project cars? On a case-by-case basis. We prefer to evaluate the vehicle first — a classic that hasn't run in five years may need work well beyond what our engine and electrical scope covers (seized brakes, dry-rotted fuel system, frame rust, etc.). Bring it for evaluation and we'll be honest about whether we're the right shop for the specific project.
How long does typical classic service take? Longer than modern service. Parts sourcing alone can add days to weeks depending on the marque. A tune-up on a car with common parts (E-Type, R107 SL, Wrangler CJ) may be same-week. A carburetor rebuild on a Lancia or an Aston Martin V8 injection rework may be two to four weeks between diagnosis, parts arrival, and completion. We plan realistic timelines from the first conversation.
Do you offer storage between service visits? Not currently. Green's Garage is a working service shop, not a storage facility. For classic owners looking for combined storage and service in Miami, we can refer you to storage specialists we know.
Do you work on race cars or vintage race prep? Case-by-case. Our philosophy is preservation-first — we prefer to service classics to original specification. Vintage race preparation involves significant modifications from original spec. We'll listen and see if we're the right shop for a specific project.
Do you accept out-of-state vehicles? Yes — Miami is one of the top winter storage destinations in the country for classic vehicles from northern states. We work with owners who ship cars to Miami for the season and want mechanical service done while the car is here. Coordinate with us in advance.
Do you provide loaner cars or Uber credits? Free Uber/Lyft within 5 miles for local customers. Classic service typically involves customers dropping cars for extended periods, so most of our classic customers arrange their own transportation home after drop-off.
What's your warranty? 2-year/24,000-mile warranty on qualifying repairs. Classic vehicles present some unique warranty considerations — parts sourced from specialty suppliers may carry the supplier's warranty rather than ours; we're transparent about which applies to which parts on your specific job.
