Range Rover Sitting Low Overnight? Here's What's Actually Failing

You walk out in the morning and the car is on the ground. One corner, or the whole vehicle, sitting on the bump stops. Maybe there's a Suspension Fault message on the cluster, maybe not. Start it up and after a minute or two it rises back to normal — so it seems fine, until it happens again the next morning.

This is one of the most common concerns Range Rover and Land Rover owners bring to us in Miami. It's also one of the most commonly misdiagnosed, and one of the most commonly over-quoted.

The important thing to understand up front: a vehicle sitting low overnight is a symptom, not a diagnosis. At least five different components produce this exact behavior, and the cost difference between them is significant. Replacing the wrong one is expensive and doesn't fix the car.


How Land Rover Air Suspension Actually Works

Every modern Range Rover, Range Rover Sport, Velar, and most Discovery models use electronic air suspension instead of conventional coil springs. Four air struts — one at each corner — hold the vehicle at a commanded ride height. An onboard compressor supplies air, a valve block routes it, ride height sensors at each corner report the actual position back to the suspension control module, and the module continuously corrects.

When the vehicle is parked and the ignition is off, the system is closed. Air should stay where it is. A vehicle that drops overnight is losing air somewhere — or the module has commanded it down because it thinks something is wrong.

That distinction is the whole diagnosis.


The Five Causes, From Most to Least Common

1. A leaking air strut

The rubber air spring inside the strut develops a crack or porous section, usually along the fold line where it rolls as the suspension travels. Air escapes slowly with the vehicle parked.

How it presents: one corner down, usually the same corner every time. The vehicle self-levels within a minute or two of starting and drives normally.

Miami accelerates this failure. Sustained heat, ozone, and humidity age the rubber faster than in northern climates, and struts that might last ten years elsewhere often show leaks at six to eight here.

2. A failed ride height sensor

Each corner has a sensor — a small linkage arm reporting suspension position to the control module. When one fails or its linkage breaks, the module gets a false reading and commands that corner to an incorrect height.

How it presents: one corner sits wrong, but often high rather than low, or the vehicle refuses to leave access height. A suspension fault message usually appears immediately rather than intermittently.

This is a far less expensive repair than a strut. It's also frequently misdiagnosed as a strut, because the visible symptom is similar.

3. Valve block leaks

The valve block distributes air between the compressor, the reservoir, and the four corners. Its internal O-rings dry out and leak.

How it presents: more than one corner drops, or the vehicle drops evenly. A compressor that runs longer than usual on startup is a supporting clue.

4. A worn or failing compressor

The compressor rebuilds system pressure. When it weakens — usually from running constantly to compensate for a leak elsewhere — it can no longer keep up.

How it presents: slow rise on startup, compressor audibly running for extended periods, and eventually a hard fault.

Here's the part that matters: the compressor is very often the victim, not the cause. A leaking strut makes the compressor work continuously until it burns out. Replace the compressor without finding the leak and you'll replace it again.

5. Suspension control module or wiring faults

Less common, but real. Corrosion at a connector, a chafed harness, or a module communication fault can produce ride height behavior that mimics a mechanical leak. Miami's humidity makes connector corrosion more common here than in dry climates.


Why the Diagnosis Has to Come First

Air suspension components are expensive. Front air struts, ride height sensors, and the retest procedure on a Range Rover Supercharged is a $3,857 repair. Front lower control arms on a Range Rover Sport run $1,900 to $2,600 depending on model. Those are real numbers from real repair orders.

Nobody should authorize that on a guess.

  1. Scan with JLR SDD — the same factory diagnostic platform the dealer uses. We pull fault codes and live ride height data from all four corners plus the suspension control module.
  2. Compare commanded height against actual height at each corner. This alone separates a sensor fault from an air leak, because a sensor fault shows a mismatch the module can't reconcile.
  3. Pressure test the system and locate the leak with soapy solution or an ultrasonic detector at the struts, valve block, and lines.
  4. Evaluate compressor duty cycle to determine whether it's failing on its own or simply compensating for a leak upstream.
  5. Written findings before any repair. You see the scan data and the leak location. You decide what gets authorized.

That process takes time and it costs money to perform — but it is dramatically cheaper than replacing an air strut that wasn't leaking.


What About Converting to Coil Springs?

Aftermarket coil conversion kits are widely advertised as a permanent fix, and they are cheaper up front.

What you lose is worth knowing before you commit:

  • Ride quality drops noticeably. Air suspension is a large part of how a Range Rover rides the way it does.
  • Access height and off-road height are gone. No kneeling for entry, no raised ride height for clearance.
  • Automatic load leveling is gone. The vehicle no longer compensates for a loaded rear.
  • The suspension fault light typically stays on unless the conversion includes a properly configured module emulator.
  • Resale value takes a hit. Buyers and inspectors notice.

For an older, high-mileage vehicle that's being kept as a utility truck, conversion can be a rational decision. For a vehicle you intend to keep well-sorted or sell, we generally recommend repairing the system properly. We'll tell you honestly which situation yours is in.


Should You Keep Driving It?

Short term, a vehicle that self-levels after startup and holds height while driving is generally safe to drive to the shop.

Stop driving it and call us if any of these apply:

  • The vehicle will not rise at all after starting
  • It drops while driving or won't hold height at speed
  • It sits so low the tire contacts the fender liner
  • The suspension fault message appears alongside a stability or braking warning

Driving on a fully collapsed strut damages the strut beyond repair and can damage the surrounding components, so a repair that was expensive gets more expensive.


FAQ

Why does my Range Rover only sit low overnight but drive fine?

Because the leak is slow. Over eight or ten hours parked, enough air escapes to drop the vehicle onto the bump stops. Once you start the engine, the compressor refills the system faster than it leaks, so it levels and drives normally. The leak is still there — it's just being outrun.

Is it always the air struts?

No, and this is the most common assumption we correct. Ride height sensors, valve block O-rings, compressor wear, and wiring faults all produce similar symptoms. Ride height sensor faults in particular are frequently misdiagnosed as strut failures, and the repair costs are very different.

How long do Range Rover air struts last in Miami?

Commonly six to eight years. Sustained heat, humidity, and ozone age the rubber air spring faster than in cooler, drier climates, so Florida vehicles typically see strut failure earlier than the same model up north.

If one strut is leaking, should I replace both?

Usually yes, on the same axle. Both struts are the same age and have seen the same conditions, and the labor overlaps substantially. Replacing one often means returning for the other within a year and paying much of the same labor twice.

Can you just replace the compressor?

Only if the compressor is genuinely the root cause. In most cases the compressor has worn out because it was running continuously to compensate for a leak elsewhere. Replacing it without repairing the leak means the new compressor fails the same way.

Does a suspension fault mean the car is unsafe?

Not necessarily. A vehicle that levels on startup and holds height at speed is usually safe for a short drive to the shop. A vehicle that won't rise, drops while driving, or shows the fault alongside stability or braking warnings should not be driven.
