A Range Rover PHEV is two complete powertrains in one vehicle, and each one is capable of generating faults the other gets blamed for. The Ingenium gas engine, the transmission with its integrated electric motor, the high-voltage battery, the onboard charger, and the energy management system that coordinates all of it — a problem anywhere in that chain can present as a problem somewhere else.

Most independent shops in Miami are comfortable with one side of that and not the other. Land Rover specialists who won't open a high-voltage system. Hybrid shops with no JLR platform depth. Diagnosing a PHEV correctly requires both.

Architecture differs slightly across these, but all use JLR's Pathfinder-compatible systems and share core components. We service the conventional Land Rover and Range Rover lineup as well — engine, air suspension, oil leaks, coolant, electrical and timing chain work.

The Seven Faults We See Most

1. The vehicle won't charge

The most reported PHEV complaint, from a wall outlet or a public charge point. The cause is somewhere in a chain: the onboard charger, the charge port inlet, a contactor in the battery management system, the energy management module's software, or — often — a 12-volt auxiliary battery too weak to initialize the charging circuit at all.

A Pathfinder scan identifies which link failed. Guessing at this one gets expensive quickly, because the onboard charger and the pack sit at opposite ends of the cost range.

2. Electric range has dropped noticeably

Some reduction is normal as any lithium pack ages. A sudden or significant drop is not, and in Miami it usually traces to one of three things: genuine cell degradation, a thermal management fault letting the pack operate outside its temperature window, or a battery management system reading state of charge incorrectly. We assess all three — they're different repairs at very different costs.

3. Hybrid system or powertrain fault warning

Dozens of fault codes can trigger this message, from a minor sensor to a real high-voltage concern. The vehicle typically reverts to combustion-only operation as a fail-safe, which means it keeps driving and owners keep driving it.

Don't. Some underlying faults worsen materially with continued use, and a car that still moves is not a car that's fine.

4. Electric motor and transmission integration faults

On these vehicles the electric motor sits inside the transmission assembly. Motor temperature sensor errors, resolver faults, and inverter problems present as reduced electric performance, unexpected engine engagement, or transmission fault codes — which is why they get misdiagnosed as transmission problems.

Correct diagnosis needs Pathfinder access and mechanical understanding of how the motor is integrated. Either one alone isn't enough.

5. Engine problems caused by not using the engine

PHEV owners who run mostly in EV mode create a specific problem: the gas engine goes weeks without a proper run. Oil degrades because short runs never fully warm it, moisture accumulates and can cause cylinder wall corrosion, and fuel goes stale enough to cause injector and fuel system faults.

We see this constantly in Miami. If you charge nightly and rarely burn gas, your engine needs more attention than a conventional Range Rover's, not less.

6. 12-volt auxiliary battery failure

The 12V initializes the entire high-voltage system. When it degrades — and Miami heat degrades batteries in roughly half the time a temperate climate does — the vehicle throws multiple warnings, may not enter ready mode, and won't charge.

It is the first thing we test on every PHEV that arrives with a hybrid warning. It's also the least expensive thing it could be, which is exactly why it gets tested first.

7. Thermal management and cooling faults

The battery and electric motor have dedicated cooling circuits separate from the engine's. Pump failures, thermostat faults and leaks in the high-voltage cooling loop cause battery performance warnings and reduced range.

Miami's ambient temperatures load this system year-round, and it is the single most consequential maintenance item on these vehicles here. A cooling fault caught early is inexpensive. Left alone, it damages the pack.

What We Service

PHEV system diagnostics — full dual-powertrain scan via JLR SDD and Pathfinder across combustion and high-voltage systems, live battery and motor data, energy management module function, and written findings before any work.

High-voltage battery assessment — cell and module voltage, state-of-health analysis, contactor function, and thermal circuit inspection. Module-level repair where the fault is isolated to one.

Charging system — onboard charger, charge port inlet, charging harness, and contactor diagnosis and repair.

Electric motor and inverter — resolver faults, temperature sensor errors, inverter failures, and reduced electric performance.

Thermal management — coolant pump, thermostat, leak repair, and chiller inspection on the battery and motor circuits.

12-volt system — testing, replacement with the correctly specified unit, and full system initialization afterward.

Ingenium engine service — oil and filter, spark plugs, fuel system, coolant, and cylinder health, with particular attention to low-engine-hours vehicles.

Software and calibration — JLR software updates via Pathfinder covering battery management calibration, charging profiles, energy management logic, and outstanding service actions.

Air suspension — full EAS diagnostics, air spring replacement, compressor service, and height sensor calibration, using the same Land Rover suspension capability that anchors our conventional work.

Scheduled maintenance — PHEV-specific annual service covering both powertrains: brake fluid, cabin filter, tire rotation, alignment, and hybrid system health check, to JLR's published PHEV intervals.

How We Diagnose

1. 12-volt first, every time. State of health under load, before any high-voltage conclusion is drawn. It resolves more of these complaints than everything else combined.

2. Full-system scan via SDD and Pathfinder. Every module — engine, transmission, hybrid control, battery management, charging, thermal, and the gateway. The PHEV-specific codes are invisible to generic OBD-II scanners.

3. Battery analysis at module level. Where the complaint involves range, charging or a hybrid warning, we pull individual module voltages and resistances rather than trusting the summary code.

4. Physical and electrical testing. Charging system load test, cooling pump current draw, DC-DC converter output, and insulation resistance testing on the high-voltage harness with properly rated instruments.

5. High-voltage safety protocol. Every HV procedure is performed by the L3-certified technician under a documented lockout, with Class 0 insulated gloves on current certification and insulated tools. On a 400-volt system this is the legal and insurance requirement, not a formality.

6. Written findings, then your authorization. Root cause, the measurements behind it, what we ruled out, and the repair scoped with options. Nothing proceeds until you approve it.

Before You Authorize a Battery Replacement

The high-voltage pack is the most expensive component on the vehicle and the one a fault code most often points toward. It is frequently not the cause.

Charging faults, cooling failures, contactor problems, module-level degradation and a tired 12-volt battery all produce symptoms that read as pack failure. Bring us the quote — we'll measure at module level and show you what the data says.

Also worth checking first: hybrid and EV high-voltage batteries carry a federal emissions warranty of 8 years or 100,000 miles, and manufacturers frequently extend beyond it. If your vehicle sits inside that window the pack may be covered at no cost. We'll tell you if we think it applies and send you to Land Rover.

Independent vs. Dealer

The Land Rover dealer is right for active warranty repairs, recall campaigns, and manufacturer-funded software actions. For post-warranty work, unresolved faults, and second opinions, we're generally faster and more thorough — no parts-volume incentive, same-week appointments against a typical multi-week dealer wait, and written findings before you authorize anything.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why won't my Range Rover PHEV charge?

The most frequent causes are a failed onboard charger, a contactor fault in the battery management system, a software issue preventing the charging profile from initializing, a corroded or damaged charge port inlet, or a 12-volt auxiliary battery too degraded to initialize the high-voltage system. A Pathfinder diagnostic identifies which link in that chain failed.

Can I drive with a hybrid system warning?

The vehicle usually reverts to combustion-only mode and remains drivable, but bring it in promptly. Faults involving the high-voltage battery or thermal management can worsen with continued use and cause secondary damage. Call and describe what's on the screen and we'll tell you whether to drive it in.

Does my PHEV still need regular engine servicing?

Yes, and this is the most commonly overlooked item on these vehicles. Because EV-mode driving means the engine runs infrequently and rarely reaches full operating temperature, oil degradation and moisture accumulation can occur faster than in a conventional vehicle driven regularly. Follow JLR's published PHEV intervals without exception.

How does Miami heat affect the battery?

Heat is the primary driver of lithium-ion degradation, and Miami is demanding on these systems. The thermal management system exists to keep the pack in its optimal window — when that circuit develops a fault, the pack is exposed to elevated temperatures during charging and use, accelerating cell degradation and reducing both capacity and range. An annual thermal management check is worth more here than almost any other preventive item.

My electric range dropped significantly. Is that normal?

Gradual reduction over years is normal. A sudden or significant drop is not, and usually indicates a thermal management fault, cell imbalance, or an outdated battery management calibration. We perform full battery health assessment including individual module voltage and state-of-health analysis to distinguish normal aging from a repairable fault.

Do you service the Defender P400e and Discovery Sport P300e?

Yes — plus the Velar P400e. Each has slight architectural differences but all use Pathfinder-compatible systems and share core components.

Will independent service affect my warranty?

No. Under the federal Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, using a qualified independent shop does not void your factory warranty, provided JLR-specification parts and correct procedures are used. We document everything. Active warranty repairs, recalls and manufacturer campaigns go through Land Rover.

What does it cost?

Repair cost depends entirely on what the diagnosis finds, which is why we don't publish ranges — a 12-volt battery and an onboard charger are the same symptom and very different numbers.
