Hybrid & EV Repair in Miami
A hybrid warning light on the dash usually comes with a scary number from somewhere: a full battery pack, a new inverter, a "system replacement." Sometimes that's the right repair. Often it isn't. At Green's Garage we test first, show you what we found in writing, and then give you the repair options, including the less expensive ones when they're the right fix.
We're an independent, family-owned shop at 2221 SW 32nd Ave, serving Miami since 1957. Hybrid and electric vehicles are one of our main focus areas, alongside Land Rover, BMW/MINI and Volvo. All high-voltage work is performed by our hybrid technician, under the owner's supervision.
Symptoms that bring hybrid and EV owners in
- "Check Hybrid System," "Hybrid System Fault," "Drive System Malfunction" or a similar warning
- The car won't go into READY, or starts and then shuts down
- Reduced power or a "limp" mode
- Fuel economy or electric range dropping over a few months
- The gas engine running more than it used to, or never shutting off
- A plug-in that won't charge, charges slowly, or stops partway through
- A loud cooling fan near the rear seat, or a hot smell from the battery area
- A/C that blows warm, which on many hybrids and EVs also affects battery cooling
- Repeated dead 12V batteries
What usually causes them
The high-voltage battery gets blamed for almost everything, but it's only one of the possible causes. Common culprits include:
- A weak 12V battery. Most hybrids and EVs need a healthy 12V (low-voltage) battery to wake up the high-voltage system. A tired 12V battery can produce warnings that look much worse than they are.
- One or more failing battery modules. A hybrid pack is built from modules. When one drifts out of balance with the rest, the whole pack can be flagged.
- Cooling problems. Clogged battery cooling fans, failed coolant pumps, low inverter coolant or A/C faults can all overheat high-voltage parts. Miami heat makes this more common.
- Charging hardware. On plug-ins, the charge port, onboard charger, DC-DC converter and wiring can each fail on their own.
- Connectors and wiring. Corrosion and moisture can cause insulation faults that set warnings without any part being "bad."
For a deeper look at fault-finding, see hybrid electrical diagnostics.
How we diagnose
- Scan with the right tool. We own factory-level software for several brands: BMW ISTA (BMW, MINI, Rolls-Royce), JLR PATHFINDER (Land Rover, Range Rover, Jaguar), Mercedes-Benz factory-level diagnostics, Honda HDS and wiTECH (Jeep and Ram). For other makes we use an Autel Ultra-class scan tool with remote expert support, and we have access to Volvo VIDA, Porsche PIWIS and VW/Audi ODIS when a job needs them.
- Test the basics first. 12V battery, grounds, fuses and cooling system before anything expensive.
- Check insulation. We use a megohmmeter (insulation-resistance tester) to find leaks between high-voltage circuits and the vehicle body.
- Test the battery module by module. When the pack is suspect, we remove it to our EV battery service table and measure each module's voltage and internal resistance.
- Write it down. You get written findings (what we tested, what failed, what passed) before we quote any repair.
Repair options, honestly
Not every failed hybrid battery needs a new pack. If one or two modules have failed in an otherwise healthy pack, replacing those modules can be the right repair. If the whole pack is worn out, a module swap only buys time, and we'll tell you that. The same goes for inverters, chargers and A/C components: we explain repair, replace and "watch it" options, with the trade-offs for each. Cost depends on what testing shows, so your written quote comes after diagnosis, with parts and labor listed, and nothing is done without your approval.
Brands and services
BMW and MINI plug-in hybrids
We diagnose with BMW ISTA, which we own. Common work includes charging faults, high-voltage warnings, cooling issues and 12V problems on BMW and MINI plug-ins, including the BMW 330e and X5 plug-in hybrids and the MINI Countryman SE ALL4. See BMW hybrid repair and MINI Cooper repair.
Range Rover and Land Rover hybrids
We own JLR PATHFINDER and have a JLR-trained technician on staff. See Range Rover PHEV repair and Land Rover hybrid repair.
Volvo Recharge T8
Plug-in hybrid diagnosis and repair on the XC90, XC60 and Volvo sedans and wagons, with access to Volvo VIDA. See Volvo hybrid repair.
Lexus and Toyota hybrids
Hybrid system warnings, battery cooling, inverter cooling and battery module work. See Lexus hybrid repair and Toyota hybrid repair.
Honda and Acura hybrids
We diagnose with Honda HDS, which we own. See Honda hybrid repair.
Mercedes-Benz hybrids
Factory-level Mercedes-Benz diagnostics in-house. See Mercedes hybrid repair.
Jeep 4xe
Wrangler 4xe and Grand Cherokee 4xe diagnosis with wiTECH. See Jeep 4xe repair.
Tesla
Out-of-warranty diagnostics and mechanical repair: suspension, brakes, low-voltage battery, A/C and heat pump. See Tesla diagnostics.
Polestar
Mechanical service only, such as brakes, suspension and tires. We don't have Polestar factory software, so high-voltage battery and charging repairs belong with Polestar service.
Battery modules and charging faults
For module testing, module replacement and full-pack decisions, see HV battery module replacement. If your plug-in or EV won't charge, see EV charging system faults.
Safety
Hybrid and EV systems run at voltages that can kill. Our hybrid technician works under the owner's supervision and follows a de-energize-and-verify procedure before touching high-voltage parts: Class 0 high-voltage gloves and PPE, an insulation-resistance check, and confirmed zero voltage before work begins.
Why Miami drivers choose Green's Garage

- Written findings before any quote. You see the test results, not just a total.
- Repair-vs-replace honesty. A module when a module is the right fix, a pack when it isn't.
- The right equipment. Megohmmeter, Class 0 PPE, an EV battery service table with module-by-module testing, and dedicated POE-oil refrigerant equipment for electric A/C compressors.
- The right people. ASE Master technicians, and our team includes an ASE L3 Hybrid/EV certified technician. High-voltage work is done by our hybrid technician, under the owner's supervision.
- People you can reach. Three generations of family ownership, 800+ Google reviews. AAA Approved and a NAPA AutoCare center. Hablamos español.
- Coverage. 2-year / 24,000-mile warranty, and financing is available.
Frequently asked questions
Will an independent shop void my hybrid warranty?
Using an independent shop for maintenance and repairs does not by itself void your factory warranty. Repairs that are still covered under warranty or a recall are usually handled by the dealer at no cost to you, and we'll tell you when that applies.
Do I really need a whole new battery pack?
Not always. We test each module. If the pack is healthy apart from one or two modules, replacing those modules may be the better value. If the pack is broadly worn, we'll recommend a full replacement and explain why.
My hybrid shows a warning but drives fine. Is it safe?
It depends on the code. Some warnings are minor; others mean the system is protecting itself from overheating or an insulation fault. Have it scanned soon, and don't ignore a warning that comes with reduced power or a burning smell.
Do you work on fully electric cars?
Yes, within the limits of our tools. We do diagnostics and mechanical repair on Tesla, and mechanical service on Polestar. Where a job needs factory software we don't have, we'll say so up front.
Who actually works on my car?
High-voltage work is done by our hybrid technician, under the owner's supervision.
