The 12V Battery Is Tested First. Every Car, Every Visit.

Every Hyundai and Kia hybrid carries a conventional 12V auxiliary battery alongside the traction pack, and it powers the control computers that manage everything else — including the relays that connect the high-voltage battery to the car.
When it weakens, those computers misbehave, and the codes they produce look like serious high-voltage problems.
In Miami's heat the 12V reaches that threshold at 18 to 30 months of outdoor operation, against 36 to 48 in a cooler climate.
A hybrid that won't enter READY, or an EV that won't wake up, is very often a dead 12V. Fifteen-minute test.

These are the same systems under two badges. Hyundai and Kia share platforms, powertrains and control architecture — the Sonata Hybrid and Optima Hybrid are mechanically siblings, and the Niro and Ioniq share their hybrid system. Diagnosing one means diagnosing both.
Before You Authorize a Battery
The traction pack is the most expensive component on the car and it's where a fault code most often points. It is frequently not what failed.
All of these produce symptoms that read as pack failure:
A degraded 12V battery — the most common cause in Miami.
A single weak module. These packs are built from individual modules. One failing module drags the pack's behaviour and the system reports pack failure.
The battery cooling system. Hyundai and Kia hybrid packs are cooled by cabin air drawn through an intake, usually behind or beneath the rear seat. In Miami that intake clogs with dust and pet hair. Restricted airflow means the pack runs hot and loses capacity permanently — and it's a ten-minute inspection nobody performs.
The DC/DC converter. These cars have no alternator. A converter running intermittently drains the 12V repeatedly, and the 12V gets replaced over and over without anyone addressing the cause.
A corroded connector, a relay, or a coolant pump. Cheap parts, expensive-looking symptoms.

Two Things Hyundai and Kia Owners Should Check First
Your warranty may still cover it
Hyundai and Kia hybrid and EV battery warranties are among the longest in the industry — considerably longer than the powertrain coverage most owners assume applies.
Before you pay anyone — including us — check your VIN with a dealer for battery warranty status and any open campaigns. If the pack is covered, that's where the car should go, and we'll tell you so on the phone.
Engine recalls and campaigns
Hyundai and Kia have issued significant engine-related recalls and extended warranties across several model years and engine families. Those are separate from hybrid system concerns but worth checking at the same time, since a single VIN lookup covers both.

The E-GMP EVs — Ioniq 5, Ioniq 6, EV6, EV9
Hyundai and Kia's dedicated EV platform is 800-volt architecture, which puts it in a small group alongside the Porsche Taycan and Audi e-tron GT.
What we service: high-voltage battery diagnostics and module-level measurement, charging faults including port and latch, thermal management, 12V and DC/DC issues, regenerative brake service, and all conventional chassis work.
Charge port and latch corrosion deserves specific mention. Brickell, Key Biscayne and Miami Beach cars especially — coastal salt air attacks charging hardware. It presents as "the cable won't release" or "charging stops randomly," and it's usually the latch rather than anything high-voltage.
Regenerative braking means the friction brakes barely get used. On an EV in salt air, corrosion becomes the failure mode long before wear does. Caliper slides and pins cleaned and lubricated at every service — that's the real brake job.

What Miami's Climate Does to These Cars
12V batteries die on a compressed timeline. 18 to 30 months instead of 36 to 48.
Cooling intakes clog. The single cheapest thing you can do to protect a hybrid pack, and almost nobody does it.
Thermal management runs continuously. On the liquid-cooled EVs, the coolant pumps and radiators work harder here than anywhere they were validated. Pump failures show as reduced power under load — highway, hot afternoon, fine at low speed.
Charge port and connector corrosion. Intermittent faults that come and go with humidity, and the hardest kind to diagnose.
Brakes corrode rather than wear. Pads look nearly new while calipers seize.
Symptoms We Diagnose
Hybrid system warning or check hybrid system message. 12V first, then the full module network.
Won't enter READY, or EV won't wake up. 12V, then relays and contactors, then control modules.
Reduced electric range or assist. Module-level battery measurement plus cooling intake inspection.
Won't charge, or charging stops early. Charge port and latch, on-board charger, and thermal limitation — the system restricts charging when the pack is too warm, which happens here.
Repeated 12V battery failures. DC/DC converter output, not another battery.
Reduced power under load. Usually thermal derate. Coolant pump current draw first.
Check engine light. Full diagnostic with factory-level data, not a code read.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a new Sonata Hybrid battery? Often not. A degraded 12V battery, a blocked cooling intake, a failed DC/DC converter, or a single weak module all produce symptoms that read as pack failure. These packs are built from individual modules and we measure every one — voltage and internal resistance — before recommending anything. Also check your warranty: Hyundai's hybrid battery coverage is among the longest in the industry and may still apply.

Can one module be replaced instead of the whole pack? Often, yes. These packs are module-serviceable and a single module costs a fraction of a pack. But it only works when the rest of the pack is healthy — if the pack is broadly degraded and one module simply failed first, the new module carries the others and you're back within a year. Module-by-module data tells us which situation you're in.
Why does my Hyundai or Kia hybrid keep killing its 12V battery? These cars have no alternator. The DC/DC converter charges the 12V from the high-voltage system, and when it runs intermittently the 12V drains and gets replaced repeatedly without anyone addressing the cause. We test converter output rather than handing you another battery. Miami heat also compresses 12V life to roughly 18 to 30 months.

Active recalls, campaigns and warranty repairs go through the dealer — and given how long the battery coverage runs on these cars, check your status first.
