Land Rover Hybrid & Mild-Hybrid Repair in Miami

A "High Voltage System Fault" on your Range Rover usually isn't the high-voltage battery.

The warning names the system that reported the fault, not the part that failed.

On a Land Rover PHEV, the Hybrid Control Unit needs stable 12V power to coordinate the powertrain. When the 12V auxiliary battery weakens, the HCU sees voltage instability and puts "High Voltage System Fault" on your cluster — while the 400-volt lithium-ion pack sits there working perfectly.

In Miami, that 12V battery reaches the fault threshold at 12 to 24 months, against 36 to 48 in European climates. Land Rover's module count — Terrain Response, air suspension, ADAS, HCU — puts a heavier combined load on it than almost any other PHEV.

So we test the 12V first. Every Land Rover PHEV, every visit, before any high-voltage conclusion.

The Compound Presentation Nobody Warns You About

The Range Rover P400e and Range Rover Sport P400e carry both air suspension and a PHEV powertrain, and both control modules run off the same 12V supply.

When that battery fails in Miami's heat, you can get a corner sitting low and a high voltage warning at the same time — from one failure.

An owner seeing both reasonably assumes an air strut plus an HV system fault. That's a five-figure assumption.

PATHFINDER accesses the air suspension module and the HCU in the same session. Height sensor live data at all four corners alongside HCU fault codes tells us whether the corner is genuinely low or the sensor signal is unstable from a failing battery — before either system's hardware is condemned.

If you've been quoted an air strut and an HV component together, get the 12V tested first.

What Miami Does to Land Rover PHEVs

12V auxiliary battery, 12–24 months. Sustained heat plus the heaviest 12V module load of any PHEV architecture. This is the leading cause of high voltage warnings in our Land Rover fleet.

Hybrid cooling pump, elevated duty cycle. The electric pump circulating coolant through the HV pack and power electronics runs far more per operating hour at 92–96°F than in any market JLR validated against. Bearing and seal wear accumulate faster than the global service data predicts.

HV battery capacity, accelerated degradation. A P400e dropping from 19 miles of EV range to 13–14 after two or three Miami summers is usually normal lithium degradation accelerated by heat — not a fault. PATHFINDER BMS cell data separates the two.

Charge port, coastal and off-road exposure. Defender P400e owners who ford water pick up port corrosion that produces charging faults indistinguishable from on-board charger faults without a physical inspection.

Symptoms We Diagnose

"High Voltage System Fault." 12V stability test plus PATHFINDER HCU and BMS codes as the first two actions. Most common cause in Miami is the 12V.

HV warning plus corner-low air suspension. See above. Single PATHFINDER session, both modules, 12V assessed as common cause first.

Won't charge, or charging stops early. PATHFINDER charging module codes separate on-board charger, port communication, HCU charging management, and thermal limitation — the BMS restricts charging when the pack is too warm, which happens in Miami.

Reduced EV range. BMS individual cell voltages, temperatures and state of health. We tell you whether it's normal Miami degradation or fault-level cell imbalance — and if it's the latter, you get the data as warranty documentation.

Hybrid cooling or thermal management warning. Pump commanded speed versus actual, coolant temperature at pack inlet and outlet. A pump that responds correctly but still throws thermal codes in Miami heat points at heat rejection capacity, not the pump.

EV mode unavailable. Distinguishes a temperature restriction — normal in Miami's heat — from a fault-level inhibition.

Ingenium check engine light. The P400e's 2.0L and P300e's 1.5L share timing chain and VVT concerns with the non-PHEV fleet. Assessed as a separate finding.

Electric A/C not cooling. The PHEV compressor runs from HV power with the engine off — that's normal. If A/C only works when the engine runs, that's a compressor or HV supply fault, not low refrigerant.

High-Voltage Battery Work

We hold ASE L3 Light-Duty Hybrid/Electric Vehicle certification, Class 0 insulated tooling, and an EV battery service table — so high-voltage pack work is within our scope, not automatically a dealer referral.

That means module-level diagnosis and, where the data supports it, module replacement rather than a full pack.More on module-level HV battery work →

What we don't do: packs showing external damage, swelling, overheating or evidence of a flood or collision event. Those go to the manufacturer, and the vehicle should not be charged in the meantime.

⚠ The Land Rover PHEV system operates at 350–400 volts. No work involving orange HV cabling, the pack enclosure or the inverter happens without the PATHFINDER isolation procedure confirmed complete and the interlock circuit verified. Most of what we see — 12V battery, cooling pump, charge port, electric A/C, air suspension, conventional systems — requires no HV proximity at all.

If your PHEV has been in a collision or flood, or you can see damage near the battery area: do not charge it. Call us first.

How We Diagnose

1. Model, PHEV variant, air suspension fitted or not, and exact symptom — established on the phone before you arrive.

2.12V auxiliary battery, tested for voltage stability under the peak simultaneous module load the HCU actually sees. A battery that passes a standard capacity test can still fail this.

3.PATHFINDER full scan — HCU, BMS, Ingenium PCM, HVAC, charging module, air suspension where fitted, Adaptive Dynamics, ABS/ESC. One session. Fault character noted: active or stored, continuous or intermittent, circuit or signal.

4.Physical assessment where the data points — cooling pump commanded versus actual speed, charge port condition, module-level pack measurement.

5.Written findings with the measurements behind them, and an itemized cost, before anything is authorized.

Before You Authorize an HV Battery

Ask any shop two questions:

Has the 12V auxiliary battery been tested for voltage stability under PHEV load?Have PATHFINDER HCU and BMS fault codes been retrieved?

Both should be yes before anyone replaces a high-voltage component. If you've already been quoted, bring us the quote.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a "High Voltage System Fault" on my Range Rover mean the hybrid battery has failed? Usually not. The Hybrid Control Unit needs stable 12V power to operate, and when the 12V auxiliary battery weakens the HCU reports a high voltage system fault even though the 400-volt pack is fine. In Miami, where 12V batteries reach that threshold in 12 to 24 months, this is the most common cause we see. We test the 12V first on every Land Rover PHEV before any high-voltage conclusion.

Why does my Range Rover show a suspension fault and a hybrid warning at the same time? The Range Rover P400e and Sport P400e run both air suspension and PHEV systems from the same 12V supply. One failing 12V battery can destabilize the air suspension control module and the Hybrid Control Unit simultaneously — producing what looks like two expensive faults from a single cheap cause. We access both modules in one PATHFINDER session and assess the 12V before condemning either.

Why is my Land Rover PHEV's electric range shorter than it used to be? Lithium-ion capacity declines with cycles and heat, and Miami produces more of both than any market Land Rover validated against. A P400e falling from 19 miles to 13 or 14 over two to three summers is typically normal degradation. PATHFINDER BMS data — individual cell voltages, temperatures and state of health — separates normal decline from fault-level cell imbalance, and if it's the latter you get the data for a warranty claim.

Can you replace one module instead of the whole hybrid battery? Often, yes. We hold ASE L3 certification and operate an EV battery service table, so pack work is within our scope. Whether a module swap is right depends on the condition of the rest of the pack — if it's broadly degraded, a new module simply carries the others. We measure module by module and show you the data before recommending either path.

Do you use the same diagnostic tools as the dealer? Yes. PATHFINDER is JLR's current factory platform and it's what we use across the entire Land Rover, Range Rover and Jaguar program — including HCU, BMS, hybrid cooling and charging modules on every PHEV.

Will independent service void my Land Rover warranty? No. Under the federal Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, independent service does not void a factory warranty when equivalent parts and procedures are used. Active warranty repairs, recalls and manufacturer campaigns go through the dealer — high-voltage battery coverage runs long, so check your status before paying out of pocket.
