If your 2012–2015 Civic Hybrid has stopped charging and stopped assisting, and someone has quoted you a replacement battery, there is a reasonable chance the pack is fine.
The failure on these cars is usually one of four circuit boards inside it.

What P0B3B Actually Means
P0B3B — Battery Voltage Sensor Internal Circuit Error.
It is the only code these cars set for this failure, and it names the system, not the part.
The 2012–2015 Civic Hybrid moved from the NiMH pack of the earlier IMA cars to lithium-ion, and with it came a different monitoring architecture. Instead of one circuit, the pack carries four separate battery management boards — A, B, C and D. Each supervises a group of cells, reports over CAN to the Motor Control Module, and together they cover all forty cells.
The failure
Each board carries two LTC6803 monitoring chips, and each chip has a voltage reference specified at 3.065 volts.
Every cell voltage a board reports is measured against that reference. When it drifts — and on a failed board it can sit more than a volt low — the board reports its cells substantially higher than they actually are.
The module sees numbers that cannot be right, stops trusting the sensing circuit, and shuts the IMA system down.
Your experience of that is simple: the car stops charging and stops assisting. The cells themselves may be perfectly healthy.
The Part Most Shops Miss
The scan tool will often name the wrong board.
There are documented cases where the diagnostic platform reported a D board failure — the board was replaced, and nothing changed. The actual fault was the A board. Another case reported C when the fault was D.
The mapping between the reported designation and the physical board is unreliable. And because every scan tool licenses the same underlying database, they are all wrong in the same way.
So a board letter from a scan tool is a starting point, not a parts order. One owner replaced all four boards and still had the fault.
How We Actually Localize It
Two datasets, together, before anything is ordered.
1. Error values from all four boards — including the binary fault code, which distinguishes a failed voltage reference from other failure modes.
2. All forty individual cell voltages — the physical cross-check.
A board group reporting cell voltages noticeably higher than the other three, where those cells measure normal on a meter, is your board. Regardless of what letter the tool printed.
We also measure the reference voltage directly at each board's bypass capacitors against the 3.065 V specification.
And the connector work first
Before condemning any board:
- Unplug and reseat the two HV connectors on each board, several times
- Unplug all four low-voltage CAN connectors — checking for corrosion, moisture, damage and continuity
- Reseat those, several times
There is a documented case of an owner replacing all four boards and still having the fault, because the problem was never a board. Twenty minutes of connector work is cheaper than four boards.

On a car that is now ten to fourteen years old, that difference frequently decides whether the vehicle is worth keeping.
It is entirely a diagnostic question. If nobody measures, the pack gets replaced.
Rules That Matter If a Board Is Replaced
Position is not interchangeable — but there is flexibility. A is interchangeable with C, and B with D. The CAN address is set by a small surface-mount resistor, and a spare C board can be reconfigured to work in an A position by moving it.
Board D carries the CAN termination resistors. It cannot substitute for B without resistor work.
CR-Z boards are not a straight swap. The circuit board inside is the same, but the case dimensions differ by two to three millimetres at the mounting holes. One owner's attempt to run Civic boards in a CR-Z pack failed outright.
Replacing the bypass capacitor does not fix it. That obvious repair has been tried. The failure is internal to the LTC chip.
What If It Isn't a Board?
Sometimes it isn't, and we will tell you.
A genuinely bad cell. One owner chased a board fault and eventually found cell #19 sitting at 1.4 volts. A collapsed cell produces readings the sensing circuit cannot reconcile, and you end up chasing the messenger. The forty cell voltages catch this.
The MCM. If all four boards check out, the connectors are clean and the cells are healthy, the module the boards report to is what remains.
A broadly degraded pack. At 150,000 miles and up, sometimes the honest answer is that one board failed first on a pack that was already tired. Putting a good board into a tired pack buys you months, not years.
You will get the module-by-module data and a straight recommendation, including when that recommendation is that the car has reached the end of what is worth spending on it.
The Older Civic Hybrids — 2003 to 2011
Different generation, different problem.
Those cars use NiMH packs, which are more sensitive to sustained heat than lithium. Miami Civic Hybrids at 80,000 to 130,000+ miles have accumulated real capacity fade — showing up as reduced IMA assist and falling fuel economy rather than a hard shutdown.
Honda HDS IMA module charge and discharge cycle data establishes whether the remaining capacity is serviceable or genuinely degraded. Module-level replacement and rebalancing is well established on these, and the aftermarket is mature.
The 12V Battery Is Tested First. Every Car, Every Visit.
Before any HDS session is interpreted and before any high-voltage conclusion is drawn.
The Civic Hybrid's 12V auxiliary battery powers the hybrid system's low-voltage control electronics continuously whenever the car is in a ready state. When it weakens, its internal resistance rises and voltage sags under load — and the Hybrid Control Module reads that instability as a possible hybrid fault.
The warning looks identical whether the 12V is the cause or a genuine HV component has failed.
In Miami's heat, that battery reaches the threshold at 18 to 30 months of outdoor operation, against 36 to 48 in a cooler climate. The conductance test takes fifteen minutes.
